Insulation Layers of a Garage Door

Insulation Layers of a Garage Door

When it comes to garage door construction, there are 1, 2, and 3 layer doors. Each layer of construction adds stability and durability to your door. It’s important to choose a garage door with the construction that complements your lifestyle.

1 layer garage door

1 layer construction is uninsulated and consists of a single sheet of steel, making it very susceptible to dents and damage. This type of garage door is best used in detached garages when you are not storing valuable items inside or concerned about climate control in your space.

2 layer garage door with polystyrene insulation

2 layer construction consists of a steel front and a layer of polystyrene insulation backed by a thin layer of vinyl. This is best used in relatively inactive driveways as the door can become dented.

3 layer garage doors with polystyrene or polyurethane insulation

3 layer construction is a complete sandwich: one layer of material, a layer of insulation (polystyrene or polyurethane), and a backing layer that matches the front material. This combination offers the most durable construction, insulation, heat loss protection. With the exception of full glass garage doors, 3 layer construction is used by all material types.
